You are very welcome to all our services. At the door, before Sunday Mass there will be people to welcome you. Ask them any questions. We don’t have special places to sit in the church except for the members of the choir who sit by the organ.
Please come, you are very welcome. You may find the Mass words have changed but we have leaflets with up to date wording, and you will soon recognise the format.
Each one of us only has to go to confession – or reconciliation as it is called if we have committed a major sin. However, we are urged to celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation at least once a year during the Easter season. Reconciliation times can be found here.
A requiem Mass can be celebrated in the church where family and friends have an opportunity to pray for the person who has died. The deceased is honoured during this Mass in a special way with incense and holy water. Afterwards the coffin is taken to the crematorium or the cemetery where more prayers are said. Undertakers are very familiar with the procedure following the death of a Catholic.
You can contact the parish priest and even have your funeral prepared by yourself; the priest will make sure that your wishes are followed / respected.
Make contact with the parish office, and they will advise you of the details and provide an application form. There is a programme of baptism preparation, and baptisms take place in the church on set days in each month. A two month notice is advisable.
Please talk to the parish priest.
At the beginning of the academic year there will be notices in the newsletter with details about the Sacramental Programme. The preparation takes place in the parish over several months. Information about the requirements and dates of the programmes will be published in the newsletter and website. Application forms will be available at the back of the church in August or contact the parish office.
The church has the RCIA, Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, which starts in September; contact the parish office to request a chat with a priest or a catechist. This programme also applies to lapsed or adults Catholics who wish to return to the church or to be confirmed.
Congratulations on your decision to get married. The Catholic Church expects each couple to give six months’ notice to the parish that they want to get married, so in the first case get in touch with the parish office. Most couples who get married in the Church are of different faiths; the Church is able to help them make adult decisions about the wedding they want. Many couples do live together before marriage, and still can be married in the Church.
The tradition of offering a Mass intention, particularly for the deceased, or to remember their anniversary originates in the very early Church. When a priest celebrates Mass with a particular intention this is a special way of praying and a Catholic may well draw comfort from a Mass being said for their private intention or deceased relative. A donation or stipend is given to the celebrant.
Priests in the Catholic Church do not draw a salary, although the parish pay all their living costs. So one way they receive personal money is from stipends. That is the word given to money they receive as donations for celebrating Masses, baptisms, weddings and funerals; blessings for new homes and signing of documents. There are no set fees. When it is a celebration, a percentage of what you will spend is appropriate.
This is a manner of honouring the Holy Eucharist, by having the Blessed Sacrament in Exposition, with proper solemnity, to the view of the faithful in order that they may pay their devotions before It.
